Description
The history of Ligatne is closely tied with the development of the Paper mill of Ligatne which was founded in 1815 and continues to produce paper as the only working paper mill in today's Latvia. The wooden architecture of Ligatne characteristic for the late 19th Ct and early 20th Ct has been well preserved till today. The living houses built for mill's workers are still inhabited by the local families. The administrative and social buildings and the director's living house all built for the mill are used for the region's administration, the culture center, the kindergarten etc.
The town is rich in nature's monuments as well. The cellars dug in the sandstone rocks are among the best known features of the town.
