Description

Founded 1262 under Archbishop Albert III, it was once the biggest and safest castle of the Riga Archbishopricy. Yearly seat of Archbishop from Sept. 29 to Febr. 7. Often damaged during fights between the Archbishopricy and the Order State. Major reconstructions in 1509-1524.Heavily damaged during the Nordic war (1654-1667)after which the defences were no longer repaired. Still inhabited until at least end of 17th C.
