In 1987 the writer Karlis Skalbe's summer cottage ‘‘Saulrieti’‘ was opened to the public as a museum dedicated to his life and creative activity. Skalbe's family lived in ‘‘Saulrieti’‘ during the summers of 1926-1944. The architecture of the house with its unusually large windows on the west side, the spacious sitting room with a high ceiling, wooden columns and a fireplace are reminiscent of Karlis Skalbe's fascinating fairytales. Opposite the house, on Vaktskalns (the Guardhill), are the Skalbe family graves, where the writer, his wife and daughter's ashes are buried.
