Description
One of the oldest Latvian museums, the Museum of Natural History, was founded in 1845 and now it is the only complex museum of natural sciences in the Baltics. Latvian and world biodiversity is reflected in the rich collections of the museum. The number of the exhibits is more than 175 thousand. Spread over four floors, the Museum of Nature displays a variety of fossils, plants and stuffed animals, complemented by valuable zoological and geographical information. The museum consists of six exhibition themes - Geology, Botany, Zoology and Entomology, Anthropology, Paleontology and People, and the Environment. One of the priorities of the museum is to promote society's interest in environmental education and to form an environmentally friendly attitude and reasonable use of natural resources. The museum also houses a department of Exhibition and Information, department of Collection Management, laboratory of taxidermy, library and photographic laboratory.
