Description
The exhibition hall operates in an in early 19th century customs warehouse designed by the architect I.E. de Vitte and built in 1823 in a late Russian classical style. "The collection is based on works created after World War II in Latvia or by Latvian artists living abroad. The most prominent Latvian painters represented in the collection are Janis Pauluks, Georgs Senbergs, Boriss Berzins, Edgars Iltners and many others. Since 1980 a collecting focus has been investigating and collecting works of Latvian artists in exile. Imants Tillers and Reinis Zusters (Australia), Laris Strunke and Leo Brieditis (Sweden), Vija Celmina and Raimonds Staprans (USA) are Latvian artists active in the international art scene and their contributions to this collection are of great importance
