Cave

Simteni (Dzirne) cave

Drabeshu par. > Amatas county > Vidzeme reg.
Description
Entrance is very narrow. Cave itself is very impressive, wide, with landslides. Width up to 7 m, height - 1,9 m, floor area - 110 m2. Small stalactites are found in this cave - this is unusual for sandstone caves. Cave discovered by R. Dzirne before the Second World War. He made some amateurish excavations at the entrance of the cave, found Neolithic settlement site, burial ground and many artefacts. Charcoal, fireplace and stone settings have been found inside this cave. Those findings are not sufficient to state that the cave has been used by Neolithic people.
