Apraksts Pašreizējās Rūjienas pilsētas tuvumā 13.gadsimtā sākumā atradās senpils, bet ar 14.gadsimta sākumu tur minēta vācu feodāļu pils, pie kuras izauga miests. Taču tikai 19.gadsimtā otrajā pusē Rūjiena sāka rosīgāk attīstīties. 1897.gadā atklāja Valkas – Rūjienas – Pērnavas šaursliežu dzelzceļa līniju.. 1920.gadā Rūjienai piešķirtas pilsētas tiesības.
Rūjienas vārds cēlies no tai cauri tekošās Rūjas upes (igauņu valodā “ruhja” ir veinkoča laiva). |
