Apraksts Atrodas Latvijas DR daļā Austrumkursas augstienē pie nelielās Cieceres upītes un Saldus ezera. Pilsētas tiesības piešķirtas 1917. g. Vēstures avotos Saldus pirmoreiz minēta 1253. gadā. 13. gs. sākumā pie Saldus ezera bija kuršu pils. Pirms 1411. g. ( domājams- 1341. g.) Livonijas ordenis uzcēla Saldū mūra pili, kas atradās tagadējā slimnīcas teritorijā. Tās apkārtnē ar laiku izveidojās neliela pilsētiņa. Pils un ap to esošā pilsētiņa tika pilnīgi nopostīta Ziemeļu kara laikā, kad plosījās arī Lielais mēris. No jauna pilsēta sāka veidoties tikai 19. gs. vidū. Vienīgā pilsēta Latvijā, kuras nosaukums, domājams bijis nekatrajā dzimtē. Tā ir vienīgā Latvijā, par kuru zināms, ka tā vismaz trīs reizes iznīcināta, vienmēr atplaukusi no jauna, turklāt katru reizi savā vietā, nedaudz pārvietojoties uz rietumiem. Ar Saldu saistīti daudzi ievērojami cilvēki. Tur dzimis dzejnieks un publicists Māris Čaklais, aktrise un režisore Elvīra Irbe-Kļava, Lāčplēša Kara ordeņa kavalieris Jānis Kronbergs, keramiķe Viktorija Vēze, tēlnieks Juris Zilmanis. |
