Apraksts Smiltene ir skaista Ziemeļvidzemes mazpilsētiņa, Vidzemes augstienes ziemeļu malā, no kuras pakalniem paveras plašs skats uz Trikātas pacēlumu un Sedas līdzenumu. Kopš seniem laikiem te krustojušies tirgotāju ceļi, kuri kalpoja ne tikai pilsētas attīstībai, bet bija viegli sasniedzami svešzemju iebrucējiem. Smiltenes novads ietilpa latgaļu Tālavas zemē. Pēc krustnešu iekarojumiem un Tālavas sadalīšanas Smiltenes novadu ieguva Rīgas bīskaps, kura ordeņa mestrs Freiersheims 1359.gadā stāvajā Abula krastā uzcēla pili. Vēstures avotos 1427.gadā pirmo reizi pie pils pieminēta tirgotāju un amatnieku apmetne - Smiltesele, bet kopš 1523.gada tā jau dēvēta par pilsētiņu. Livonijas kara laikā Smiltenes pili un pilsētiņu divas reizes (1559. un 1560.gadā) nopostīja Ivana Bargā karaspēks. Poļu laikos Smiltene un tās apkārtne nokļuva stārosta (pilskunga) Kaspara Mlodecka rokās. Ziemeļu kara sākumā, 1702.gada 9.augustā krievu karaspēks nodedzināja Smilteni. Pelnos pārvērta baznīcu, muižu, 19 miesta mājas, deviņas apkārtējās muižas un 204 zemnieku mājas. Pēc kara novadu galīgi izpostīja bads un mēris, izmira daudzas lauku sētas. Zviedru valdība 1708.gadā, tagadējās baznīcas vietā, uzcēla jaunu baznīcu un gādāja par Smiltenes miesta atjaunošanu. Jauns un ievērojams periods Smiltenes vēsturē aizsākās ar 1760.gadu, kad Krievijas imperatore Katrīna II Smiltenes muižu uzdāvināja ģenerālgubernatoram G.Braunam. Tajā laikā tika atjaunota Smiltenes muiža, no 1763.-1771.gadam uzceltas muižas ēkas, kas saglabājušās līdz mūsdienām. Pēc Brauna nāves mantinieki muižu pārdeva Rīgas tirgotājam J.S.Bandavam, kura dzimta to pārvaldīja gandrīz 100 gadus. 1893.gadā Smiltenes muižu nopirka firsts Pauls Līvens, kurš zemi sadalīja gruntsgabalos, tādējādi likdams pamatus tagadējai Smiltenes pilsētai. Pirmo reizi elektrība iespīdējās Smiltenes muižā 1901.gadā no Līvena spēkstacijas Vidusezera krastā. Par Līvena naudu 1903.gadā uzcēla slimnīcu, kokzāģētavu ar tvaiku darbināmu, elektrocentrāli pie Tiltlejas ezera, 1913.gadā, tiem laikiem modernu, hidroelektrostaciju ar derevācijas kanālu. Pēc P.Līvena ierosinājuma un ar viņa finansiālu atbalstu izbūvēja (1911) šaursliežu dzelzceļa līniju uz Valmieru. Latvijas Republikas laikā turpinājās pilsētas izaugsme, Smiltenei 1920.gadā piešķīra pilsētas tiesības. |

Un ja savestu vēl apkārtni gar upīti un sen nosilušo pirtiņu,būtu kā vecajos,labajos laikos.Nu pietrūkst tur kautkā.
Skaistākā pilsēta Valkas rajonā. Viss tajā ir sakopts, ir daudz kultūras pieminekļu un arī foršais Cērtenes pilskalns.
