Description
In 1987 the writer Karlis Skalbe's summer cottage ‘‘Saulrieti’‘ was opened to the public as a museum dedicated to his life and creative activity. Skalbe's family lived in ‘‘Saulrieti’‘ during the summers of 1926-1944. The architecture of the house with its unusually large windows on the west side, the spacious sitting room with a high ceiling, wooden columns and a fireplace are reminiscent of Karlis Skalbe's fascinating fairytales. Opposite the house, on Vaktskalns (the Guardhill), are the Skalbe family graves, where the writer, his wife and daughter's ashes are buried. The view of Lake Alauksts from Saulrieti is one of the most picturesque scenes in Piebalga
