Swamp

Witches' swamp

Kemeri National Park — Kemeri  > Jurmala  > Riga reg.
Description
Raganu (witches) marsh is a high or moss marsh little influenced by people. The marsh has been developed through thousands of years in the following way - bog-mosses are growing a thick peat layer, which rises above the environment as a dome (due to this reason it is called a high marsh). A lot of plants from other species, for example, calluna vulgaris, she-berry, andromeda polifolia, are also growing on the covering of bog-mosses. Rhynchospora alba, carex limosa are growing in small water bodies. In some places the marsh is overgrown by small pines. Several protected bird species - crane, tringa glareda, blackcock, pluvialis apricaria, osprey, lanius exubitor, fern owl - are living in the marsh. Also rare lacerta agilis can be met in the marsh.
