The first exhibition of museological significance was organized in Kuldiga in 1899. Although there were no other exhibitions in Kuldiga until the 1930s, historical and ethnographic materials were nevertheless being collected. The Kuldiga District Museum was founded in 1935 and has been situated in Pils Street since 1940. Exhibits from private collections and the museum of Kuldiga State Secondary School formed the basis of the museum's collection. The first item exhibited was the painting ‘‘View of the Rumba’‘ by Friedrich Schper in 1851. The collection holds over 85 000 items including collections of archeology, ethnography, numismatics. Written documents in the collection date back to the 17th century. The photographs and photo negatives give an insight into the life of Kuldiga district from the end of the 19th century until today. Paintings, sculptures, graphic art and works of applied art are kept in the museum's art department. There is a unique collection of playing cards in the ‘‘Room of Playing Cards’‘. The museum organizes temporary exhibitions and various events
