Description
The church is situated in the very centre of Valka, at the junction of Raiņa iela and Rīgas iela. The name of the church was first mentioned in 1477, at which time it was already called St. Catherine’s. A difficult fate has befallen the church in the course of time – it has suffered destruction twice, however, it has been rebuilt with the help of the Vrangelis family. First the church was destroyed during the Great Northern War in 1702, and one more time just after 50 years. In addition, a fire broke out in the church on the night of 4 February 1907, as a result of which the roof construction was damaged, the tower burnt down and the bell fell down into the church. The reconstruction work was completed in 1910.
