Apraksts Pilsēta Vidzemes piekrastes ziemeļu daļā pie Igaunijas robežas, kas izveidojusies sena lībiešu zvejnieku ciemata vietā. Ainažu nosaukums cēlies no igauņu vārda - hain - siens - vai hainastee - ceļš, kas iebraukts vedot sienu no jūrmalas pļavām. Taču iespējams, ka pilsēta savu vārdu ieguvusi no lībiešu vārda - ainagi, kas nozīmē - vienīgais...
19.gs. otrajā pusē Kurzemes un Vidzemes zvejnieku ciemos bija daudz lēta darbaspēka. Tuvējie meži, kuros auga daudz mastu priedes, deva materiālu kuģu būvei. Pēc K.Valdemāra iniciatīvas Latvijas un Igaunijas piekrastē izvērsās kuģu būve.
Ainažu attīstību sevišķi veicināja pirmā latviešu jūrskola, kuru 1864.g. nodibināja tālbraucējs kapteinis Kristians Dāls pēc K.Valdemāra ierosmes. Mācības bija bezmaksas un notika latviešu, igauņu un vēlāk arī krievu valodās. Jūrskola pastāvēja 50 gadus, līdz Pirmajam pasules karam.
1900.-1905. g. Ainažos uzbūvēja tirdzniecības ostu. 1926.g. Ainažiem piešķīra pilsētas tiesības. Vislielākos postījumus nodarīja Otrais pasaules karš - tika nodedzināta jūrskola, izpostīta osta un labības noliktavas. Lai gan pēc kara osta tika atjaunota, uzplaukumu pilsēta vairs nepiedzīvoja.... |

jaukaaku vietu, kur atpuusties no riigas troksnjiem, nezinu.. it sevishkji jau vasaraa, vinkaarshi burviiga pilseeta, kaa arii taas iedziivotaaji. un nav taa, ka peec plkst.18:00 ielaas nebuutu cilveeku, vasaraa pat 3 naktii pie "Liedaga" kaads buus, protams, ziemaa ir nedaudz savaadaaks, bet tomeer nav taa, ka tur ielas buutu kaa izslauciitas
Nesen biju Ainažos un pārliecinos ka šeit kā Igaunija agri slēdzas un 18:00 uz ielas nav neviena cilvēka.
