Apraksts Piltene dokumentos minēta jau 1295. gadā. Pilsēta kopš 1557. gada. Tagad Piltenē ir 1,2 tūkstoši iedzīvotāju.
Teika vēstī, ka Pilteni esot dibinājis Dānijas karalis Valdemārs, kas devies ar kuģiem sirojumā pa Kurzemi. Viņš nolēmis celt pilsētu tur, kur satikšot pirmo zēnu ("piltene" vecdāņu valodā nozīmējot puiku). Šādu zēnu karalis tiešām saticis, makšķerējot pie tagadējās Piltenes.
Pirms 1309. gada vācu krustneši šeit uzcēla bīskapa pili, ap kuru izauga miests. Īstenībā pilsētiņa ir izaugusi kuršu pils un apmetnes vietā, bet teika liecina par Piltenes sakariem ar Dāniju. Kādreiz tā bija vienielas pilsēta. Vienīgā iela puslokā ietvēra pili. 14. gadsimta otrajā ceturksnī - 1559. gadā Piltene bija Kurzemes bīskapijas pārvaldes centrs. Kad sabruka Livonija, pēdējais katoļticīgais bīskaps 1559. gadā pārdeva savas tiesības uz Piltenes bīskapiju Dānijas karalim. Toties karalis, dalot mantojumu, atdeva šīs zemes savam brālim hercogam Magnusam. Krievijas cara Ivana Bargā brāļameitas vīrs Magnuss 1577. gadā lūdza Polijas karali atzīt Piltenes bīskapiju par poļu lēni, kas arī notiek 1578. gadā pēc Polijas karaspēka un Dānijas piekritēju (muižnieku) kaujas. 1585. gadā tiek noslēgts Kronborgas līgums. Līdz ar to pilsēta kļūst par Piltenes apgabala centru. No 1617. gada Piltenes apgabals bija tieši pakļauts Polijas karalim. 1656. gada hercogs Jēkabs gan ieguva Piltenes apgabalu, bet 1717. gadā tas atkal tiek atdalīts no hercogistes.
1795. gadā kopā ar Kurzemes hercogisti Piltenes apgabalu pievieno Krievijai. 20. gadsimta sākumā pilsētiņa panīka. Tās iedzīvotāju skaits samazinājās no 1507 līdz 735 cilvēkiem. Piltenes attīstību kavēja satiksmes ceļu trūkums un Ventspils saimnieciskā konkurence, un 20. gadsimtā tai atkal bija tikai viena iela. Lielā iela - raksturīgs 19. gadsimta apbūves posms.
Bīskapa pils drupas. Piltenes pils izmantota līdz 16. gadsimtam. Teika par apakšzemes gaņģi no pils, kura izeja bijusi pie Jaunarāju mājām.
Piltenes luterāņu baznīca, būvēta no 1709. līdz 1719. gadam. Zeltīts koka altāris - gatavots 18. gadsimta 3. ceturksnī un kancele - 18. gadsimta sākumā. J. Rozentāla gleznas kopija. Ērģeles ar 9 reģistriem tapušas 1722. gadā, prospekta autors - Liepājas koktēlnieks J. Kreicbergs. Blakus altārim H. Ostenzakenam veltīts kenotafs - 19. gadsimta sākumā - ar apbedījumiem nesaistīts piemineklis. |

Jauka vieta. Kaut arī Piltene nav bagāta ar liela mēroga apskates objektiem, tomēr tā ir sakopta un skaista. Patika baznīca un muiža.
