Apraksts Vēstures avotos Priekule pirmo reizi minēta jau 1483. gadā, kad šeit zemi ieguvusi baronu Korfu dinastija. Vēl šodien pilsētā ir baronu Korfu pils, kurā izvietota skola un saglabājušies 1688. gadā celtie pils vārti, kuru attēls izmantots pilsētas ģerbonī, kad 1928. gadā Priekulei piešķir pilsētas tiesības. Par lielāku apdzīvotu vietu sākusi veidoties tikai pēc Liepājas - Viļņas dzelzceļa līnijas atklāšanas 1871. gadā. 2.pasaules kara laikā no 450 mājām pilnīgi nesagrautas palikušas tikai 40. 1949. g. - 1959.g. Priekule bijusi rajona centrs. Priekulē vai Priekules pagastā dzimuši: dzejnieks J. Peters, kultūras darbinieks Jevgeņijs Meija, ķīmijas zinātņu doktors Valdis Kampars, mācītājs un rakstnieks Kārlis Kampe, keramiķe Edīte Zvagule, bērnību pavadījis dramaturgs Elmārs Ansons. |
