Apraksts Siguldas pilsētas tiesības ieguva 1928. gadā, lai gan tās vēsture ir daudz senāka. 11. gs. Gaujas lejtecē ienāca somugru ciltis – lībieši. Teikas un dokumenti vēsta par nocietinātajām koka pilīm Sateseli, Turaidu, Kubeseli, par pretošanos vācu krustnešiem. Siguldā un apkārtnē zināmi septiņi lībiešu pilskalni un daudzi uzkalniņkapi. Iekarotās lībiešu zemes 1207. gadā savā starpā sadalīja Zobenbrāļu ordenis un Rīgas bīskaps Alberts. Ordenis Gaujas kreisajā krastā uzcēla mūra cietoksni SIEGEWALD (Uzvaras mežs – vācu val.). Tas sargāja izveidotās Ordeņvalsts robežu ar Rīgas bīskapiju Gaujas labajā krastā. Pie pils izveidojās tirgotāju pilsētiņa, kurā uzcēla arī mūra baznīcu. Kristīgo draudzi nodibināja pāvesta sūtnis Vilhelms no Modenas 1226. gadā. Livonijas kara laikā (1558.- 15873.) Siguldu divreiz nopostīja krievu karaspēks. Pēdējais Livonijas Ordeņmestrs Gothards Ketlers 1561. gadā padevās Polijas – Lietuvas virsvarai, meklējot aizsardzību pret Ivanu IV Bargo un rezultātā Vidzeme nonāca Polijas sastāvā. Sigulda kļuva par Stārastijas centru. Poļu – zviedru kara laikā (1600. – 1629.) pili un pilsētiņu sagrāva karojošo armiju artilērija. Siguldas pils zaudēja savu militārā cietokšņa nozīmi un kļuva par muižas centru. Ārējā priekšpilī uzcēla saimniecības ēkas un dzīvojamo māju – Jauno pili. (1881.) Siguldas uzplaukums sākās 19. gs. beigās līdz ar ceļa Rīga – Pleskava un dzelzceļa Rīga – Valka būvi. Muižas īpašnieku kņazu Krapotkinu dzimta gadsimtu mijā izkopa Siguldu par Krievijā populāru atpūtas vietu. Ērtā satiksme ar Rīgu veicināja atpūtnieku pieplūdumu, kuri varēja pastaigāties pa tā saucamajām “Alpu takām, aplūkot pilsdrupas un alas, izklaidēties, vizinoties ar ormani, vai braucot ar bobsleja kamanām. Pirmā pasaules kara laikā Siguldā tika daļēji nopostīta koka apbūve – vasarnīcas un pansijas, kas bija celtas Šveices kalnu kūrortu apbūves stilā. Latvijas brīvvalsts zemes reformas laikā atsavināto Siguldas muižas centru ieguva Rakstnieku un žurnālistu biedrība un izveidoja tajā atpūtas namu. kopš 1923. gada Siguldas apbūvi noteica topošais pilsētas plāns, regulējot gruntsgabalu lielumu, ielu virzienus, parku un skvēru izveidi. II pasaules kara laikā Siguldā sagrāva dzelzceļa staciju, Gaujas tiltu, brīvdabas estrādi. Padomju laika izstrādātais pilsētas attīstības plāns (1946.) paredzēja radīt jaunu ekonomisko pamatu Siguldas izaugsmei, veicinot vietējo rūpniecības un komunālo celtniecību. Sigulda kļuva par neliela rajona administratīvo, saimniecisko un kultūras centru (1950. – 1961.). 50. gadu sākumā Siguldai pievienoja Krimuldas un Turaidas vēsturiskos centrus. Sāka darboties 3 sanatorijas un tūristu bāze Turaidā. Satiksmi uz Krimuldu uzlaboja gaisa trosu ceļš (1969.). Gaujas Nacionālajā parkā Sigulda veidojās kā intensīvās atpūtas zona, kuru gada laikā apmeklē ap 1,5 miljoni tūristu. 60 – 80 gados Siguldā izveidojās mazpilsētām raksturīgā apbūve, kurā privātās mājas mijas ar komunālo daudzdzīvokļu namu kvartāliem. Pēc kamaniņu un bobsleja trases uzcelšanas (1986.) Sigulda kļuva par starptautiskas nozīmes sporta centru. |
