Apraksts Ķezberkalniņā senatnē bijusi Metsepoles lībiešu novada pils - Lemisele (arī Lemiselle, no lībiešu val. - plaša sala meža purvā) ar ciemu. Tolaik ar jūras kuģiem pa Svētupi un Dūņezeru uz šejieni braukuši arī svešzemju tirgoņi. Limbažu pilsētas izveidošanās saistāma ar Rīgas arhibīskapa pils celtniecību 13.gs. Literatūrā atrodamas norādes, ka bīskaps Alberts 1223.gadā sev cēlis pili Limbažos. Līdz ar to iedibinājās tradīcija šo laiku uzskatīt par pilsētas dibināšanas gadu, kaut gan Latviešu Indriķa hronikā par to gan nekas nav teikts. 14. gs. te jau bija pilsēta - lielās Hanzas savienības locekle un vienlaikus arī plaša, pārsvarā latviešu apdzīvota (lībieši jau bija pārtautoti vai atspiesti uz pašu jūras piekrasti) novada saimnieciskais centrs. Uz Lemiseli (vāciski - Lemsahl) pēc iekšzemes precēm - medus, vaska, kokmateriāliem, ādām, labības -brauca kuģi no Lībekas, Visbijas, Kopenhāgenas un citām attālākām vietām. 1385. gadā Rīgas arhibīskaps Johans IV dāvināja zemes gabalu pilsētas tālākai izbūvei oficiāli piešķirot pilsētas tiesības, un nocietinājis to ar mūriem un aizsarggrāvjiem. Tolaik pilsētas tirgus laukumā atradusies Sv. Labrenča baznīca, ģilžu nams (trim ģildēm) un rātsnams. 16. gs. sākumā pilsētas kā tirdzniecības centra nozīme mazinājās, jo sakarā ar Svētupes un Dūņezera aizsērēšanu tā vairs nebija sasniedzama kuģiem, un līdzšinējās novadā ražoto preču eksporta funkcijas lielā mērā pārņēma Rīga un Salacgrīva. Bez tam pilsētu cita pēc citas piemeklēja dažādas nelaimes. 1558.g. to nodedzināja Jāņa Briesmīgā karaspēks, 1567. g. to pašu izdarīja zviedri, bet 1575. g. atkal krievi.
Pēc atkārtotas Lemiseles ieņemšanas 1602. g. zviedri galīgi nopostīja pilsētu un tās nocietinājumus, kurus pēc tam vairs neatjaunoja. Pēc nostāstiem, ap šo laiku kāds zviedru mācītājs nejauši izdzirdētos vārdus "Limba" un "āži", salicis kopā, domādams ar to vietas nosaukumu, un tā esot cēlies pilsētas pašreizējais nosaukums.

Limbažos ir arī Livonijas ordeņa plisdrupas (blakus muzejam), bet Vietās šāds objekts nav atzīmēts. Pašlaik pilsdrupas ir iekonservētas.
Superīgā vieta. Limbažos ir skaistākais vēsturiskais centrs Vidzemē. Muzejā ir laba ekspozicija. Ezeri ar gulbjiem arī ir skaisti. Iesaku visiem uz turieni atbraukt
